Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service
Mon., Jan. 20, 2025
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday designated as a national Day of Service. Begun in 1994, the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service has continued to grow, encouraging Americans to volunteer and make an impact in their communities.

Harker’s Second Annual Day of Service

Harker’s Day of Service is Mon., Jan. 20. This is a chance to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. King with activities hosted by the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and the community service and student activities coordinators. It is designed to encourage the Harker community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents and friends of Harker to answer this question posed by Dr. King:

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?”

We are working with different organizations to create opportunities to volunteer on-site. Once those opportunities have been finalized, we will share that information with you in the Announcements section of the parent portal.

In the meantime, please use the link below to let us know you are committed to participating in community service activities at our upper school campus. The form will be open now until Dec. 20 or when we arrive at 200 total participants, whichever comes first.

Also, it’s not too late to RSVP for our Harker Speaker Series on Fri., Jan. 24 with poet Nikki Giovanni. Please see below.

Grit, Grace, and Glow: An Evening with Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni
Nikki Giovanni is one of this country’s most widely read poets and one of America’s most renowned poets worldwide. Her poem “Knoxville, Tennessee” is arguably the single literary work most often associated with that city.

She has received numerous awards in the course of her career, including seven Image Awards from the NAACP, more than two dozen honorary degrees, the first Rosa Parks Woman of Courage Award, the Langston Hughes Medal for Poetry, and the Carl Sandburg Literary Award. Oprah Winfrey recognized her in 2005 as one of 25 “Living Legends.” She continues to teach, write and publish books. Her latest collection, “Poems: 1968-2020,” was released in March 2024. Learn more about Nikki Giovanni.

Giovanni will be interviewed by history teacher Triston Brown. The evening includes a performance by The Harker School Orchestra. A Q&A and dessert reception will follow the talk.
