Gym and Theater Construction
CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Here’s an update of the exciting and historic construction of the new gym and theater on the upper school campus. Enjoy!
Message from the Head
The progress of the new gym and theater at our upper school is truly changing the face of our campus, as you have probably noticed if you have driven by on highway 280 recently. These venues are not replacing similar spaces we already have on campus; they are fully new spaces and will transform our school in ways we cannot even imagine yet.

Please take the time to watch the latest construction update video below. You will see the first interior views of the gym, and you will hear about its many features, including seating for 900, hydrotherapy, locker rooms and more.

Signed beam installed yesterday!
Beam being lifted to top of building
It was a banner day at the construction site yesterday as the special steel beam signed by donors, students, faculty, staff and friends was raised high and bolted into place. Festooned with a “topping out” tree, a construction industry tradition that indicates the highest point in the structure has been placed, the beam installation was an historic and exciting moment. Read more about how the 800 tons of steel used for this project will help make our students’ dreams come true (see story below).

Steel in the sky: performing arts and athletic centers’ strength on display
The powerful ironwork structure of the performing arts (PA) center is reaching for the sky – the great frame can be seen from Harker’s middle school parking lot a mile away. The athletic center is farther along: its steel structure is rapidly being covered up. Here is a little insight into how all that steel – 575 tons for the PA center and 225 for the athletic center – moves from the steel shop to being bolted into place at Harker.

How to help
We still need additional support to complete the construction, and it’s not too late to participate in this project. Gifts of $2,500 and above qualify for a naming opportunity in the new buildings, as well as a paving tile in the central plaza. Gifts may be made online. Please contact Joe Rosenthal, executive director of advancement, at joe.rosenthal@harker.org with any questions.
