Dear Harker Families –
We want to remind you of the upcoming Common Ground workshop titled “Creating Community & Connection Across Cultures” with Lee Mun Wah, on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 9 a.m. at Harker’s middle school campus, located at 3800 Blackford Ave. Master diversity trainer Lee Mun Wah will guide parents as they interact with other participants in groups to share and practice the strategies and skills he will teach. Please note that this Common Ground event is in a workshop format, versus a traditional presentation.
Mr. Wah will show parents how to build a connection across cultures based on talking in person, rather than through texts or social media. Activities will provide participants time to share the stories and life experiences that have shaped and influenced who they have become, as well as their aspirations for the future. As parents and educators, we will learn how to build a sense of community among multicultural groups and to encourage our children to do the same.
Mr. Wah is an internationally renowned documentary filmmaker, author, poet, Asian folkteller, educator, community therapist and diversity trainer. During this workshop, parents will learn how to apply Mr. Wah’s Art of Listening & Responding. He will discuss ways to respond compassionately and openly about diversity issues, and how to listen mindfully and with awareness. He will also talk about strategies to create a sense of community through dialogue and stories and to recognize the impact and intent of our communications. Here is a link to his TedX presentation.
