Steel Framing
Hello, Cambrian Neighbors:
We continue to thank you for your patience as we work to complete work on our middle school campus. Here is this month’s update:
We have completed the steel structure erection of the classroom building, some of the noisiest work of our project. Scaffolding will be erected around the building in the next couple of weeks. As a part of the scaffolding, a sound blanket will be attached to the exterior of the scaffolding that will help deaden sound transfer from within the shell of the building. The sound blanket will not completely mask sound transfer, but will reduce the overall sound level coming from the interior of the building.
Backup bell/beepers on heavy equipment are required by CAL OSHA. We know that this creates additional noise for our immediate neighbors. Unfortunately, neither Harker nor our contractor has control over the use of backup bells on heavy equipment for safety reasons. We know it’s irritating and we are so sorry.
Tree placement along the north property line will happen by mid-November. There is still some grading prep work to be done. The tree selection for that portion of the campus will be Lophostemon confertus (common name “Brisbane Box”). This is an evergreen tree that grows vertically quickly in its first 10 years of planting, then begins to broaden. Trees will reach 60-70’ in height and up to 35’ across. The specimens for our project will be 36” boxes at 13-15’ tall. They will be placed in mid-November to start establishing privacy and sound buffering, and be planted in the spring.
A few of you reached out regarding offensive language being heard from the workers on site. Devcon’s superintendent has spoken to all of the trade foremen and has instructed them that offensive language will not be tolerated on the project. We have surmised that the issue was with the steel erection crew. They are finished and will not be returning. We sincerely apologize for this.
We have had a few community members ask if there is any footage of the project. We do have some and will share it with you each month. This time lapse video shows the pouring of the concrete foundation of the main classroom building: https://vimeo.com/463992970
Finally, if any of you would like a short weekly update each Friday of what’s ahead for the week – which may be especially of interest to our immediate neighbors – please reply to this email. We will send our first one this Friday to those who wish this more frequent communication.
We thank you for your understanding and patience through our construction phase. We continue to work on ways we can minimize the disruption to the community and welcome any suggestions you have at any time by emailing communications@harker.org. For immediate concerns, call our construction hotline (Mon.-Fri. from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.) at 408.510.8035.

Thank you and take good care,
