The 50th anniversary of Earth Day is coming up on Wed., April 22, 2020. Not only will this be a worldwide celebration, but The Harker School is planning a comprehensive all-school observation of the day that will feature a variety of elements designed to help our students and community learn more about the topic of sustainable living, such as:
•
Limited electricity use on all campuses that day
•
Sustainable food sourcing only
•
Outdoor classes – we’re getting creative!
As part of the lead up to Earth Day 2020 the Harker Student Green Team wants to encourage Harker families to celebrate the day at home, as well. For instance, the students have reminded us that one of the biggest ways people can help the environment is to be conscious of their eating habits, such as:
•
reducing meat consumption
•
buying organic and local foods
•
staying away from excessive packaging
•
buying sustainable seafood
As noted by Head of School Brian Yager, “Harker has had a tradition of providing and promoting meals that reflect an appreciation for the environment. In addition to working with Chef Steve and previous food service directors to create locally sourced, organic and low impact meals, the new fruit orchard on the Saratoga campus reflected Diana Nichols’ intent to promote and provide fresh, healthy and as local as possible produce for our students. Our plans for the future are to continue and build upon this legacy.” (For more detail on how you can eat in a more sustainable way, check the detailed announcement in the portal.)
Stay tuned in the coming weeks leading up to Earth Day on Wed., April 22 as we share tips and keep you up to date on ways that sustainability is being practiced at Harker.
