Harker Logo
Dear Lower and Middle School Parents,
We are following up to share some updates on the new uniforms that we announced a few weeks ago. Thank you all for your questions and feedback. We have compiled an FAQ in the resources tool of the parent portal (search for “uniforms” or “FAQs”).

When we launched our upper school in 1998, green formally became Harker’s official school color for all grades. The color green is core to Harker’s identity, and we have been looking for opportunities to make that transition. We acknowledge that this is a big change, and we want to make the transition as smooth as possible.
New Uniforms FAQ
Extended Transition Period
In order to help ease the transition for families with multiple children wearing the Harker uniform, we have extended the transition time for the blue regular uniform pieces to two years. The transition period for the full dress uniform will still be one year. To put this another way:
Blue full dress uniform items will be allowed for one year (the 2018-19 school year)
Blue regular uniform items will be allowed for two years (the 2018-19 and 2019-20 school years)
Note that the Class of 2024 (current grade 6) will retain their two-year transition period for all uniform items.
Phase-Out of Blue Uniform Items: Donating and Recycling
As we transition to the new uniform, we will be offering opportunities for families to donate their blue uniform items. Navy blue bottoms that are still wearable will be collected and given to Sacred Heart Community Center in downtown San Jose. Items with logos will be shredded by a local company that repurposes them into other fabrics.

This collection program will take place at the end of the 2018-19 school year. Until then, families who want to clear out their blue uniform pieces may put them in the Uniform Exchange closet for other families who still want them for the transition period.
Thank you, as always, for your feedback and support. We are excited for our school uniforms to join our athletic uniforms and spirit wear in proudly showing our school color.

Sincerely,

Greg Lawson
Assistant Head of School for Student Affairs
